A 25-MEMBER committee has been inaugurated by the Federal Government to drive the process leading to the formulation of a National Climate Adaptation Strategy and Plan of Action (NASPA), which will provide a sound basis for integration of climate change adaptation into national policies and programmes at all levels of government, the private sector, and civil society.
Minister of Environment and Urban Development, Mr. John Odey, who inaugurated by the forum recently in Abuja, said the forum was put together as requirement for the preparation of the NASPA, and applauded the development partners and groups for collaborating with government in making the initiative possible.
The committee, which members are drawn from such stakeholders' groups as civil society, government, private industry and environmental groups, is known as the Multi-Stakeholder Forum (MF) and is saddled with the task of developing the NASPA and ensuring a systematic harmonisation of efforts to effectively address the impact of climate change in the country.
A pact between the Special Climate Change Unit (SCCU) of the Federal Ministry of Environment (FME), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Building Nigerian Response to Climate Change (BNRCC)/Nigeria Environment Study/Action team (NEST), Nigeria-CAN supported by Coalition for Change (C4C), and Heinrich Boll Foundation provided the impetus to anchor the forum and enhance the adoption of adaptation efforts.
